Ramakrishna:
What will a man gain by merely reasoning about the words of the scriptures? Ah, the fools! They reason themselves to death over information about the path. They never take the plunge. What a pity!
(p. 332)
Ramakrishna:
One ray of light from the Goddess of Wisdom stuns a thousand scholars.
(p. 290)
Ramakrishna:
Is it possible to understand God's action and His motive? He creates, He preserves, and He destorys. Can we ever understand why He destroys? I say to the Divine Mother: "O Mother, I do not need to understand. Please give me love for Thy Lotus Feet." The aim of human life is to attain bhakti As for other things, the Mother knows best. I have come to the garden to eat mangoes. What is the use of my calculating the number of trees, branches, and leaves? I only eat the mangoes; I don't need to know the number of trees and leaves.
(pp. 217-218)
Ramakrishna:
One cannot get true feeling about God from the study of books. This feeling is something very different from book-learning. Books, the scriptures, and science appear as mere dirt and straw after the realization of God.
(p. 353)
Girish:
Narendra says that God is beyond our words and thought.
Ramakrishna:
That is not altogether true. He is, no doubt, unknowable by this ordinary mind, but He can indeed be known by the pure mind. The mind and intellect become pure the moment they are free from attachment...
(p. 372)
